The Village Gardeners Work to Improve the LA River
Jun 21st
In our last eNewsletter issue we highlighted a few ways we can make a positive impact on our community. Sometimes it’s nice to be inspired by the work of others, and it’s also nice to see how all the hard work we do is paying off.
Well, look no further than The Village Gardeners, a non-for-profit group made up of Studio City and Sherman Oaks residents.
This grassroots organization has a mission we can get behind; they simply want to help restore one half-mile section of the L.A. River between Fulton Avenue and Coldwater Canyon.
“It’s really a mile of river front when you count both sides,” Rick Rabins, a long-time resident of Studio City and President of Village Gardeners, Inc., recently told Victoria Jones of Patch.com.
Rick is not doing it alone. His group is well organized. Hundreds of volunteers come together to improve this little stretch of riverfront. They clean up trash, clear catch basins, pull out dead and diseased trees and replace them with drought resistant native plants and doggie waste bag dispensers. They hold events throughout the year, so if you live in the area make sure you check in with The Village Gardeners’ events page to lend a hand.

18th Annual Kids Ocean Day Screams “Kelp Us!”
Jun 8th
It’s been eighteen years since the very first Kids Ocean Day, and this year’s event was the largest to date. On June 2nd, over 6,300 students along with teachers and volunteers from the Los Angeles area cleaned up Dockweiler Beach and formed a massive talking fish that said “Kelp Us!”
The 18th Annual Adopt-A-Beach Clean-Up was made possible with the help of the Malibu Foundation for Environmental Education, the California Coastal Commission, the City of Los Angeles and Keep Los Angeles Beautiful.
“The event was awesome,” said Miguel Barahona, a teacher at La Tijera K-8 School in Inglewood, whose students participated in the event. “Learning to take care of the earth is best when kids start young.”
Kids Oceans Day celebrated World Oceans Day, and is held at six locations along the California coast, extending from Humboldt County all the way to San Diego. Thousands of pounds of trash were collected by children at these locations. Check out some fun photos of the kids that helped out at Dockweiler Beach.
“Through our program’s efforts, the students learned how their actions make a very powerful impact on the world,” said Michael Klubock, the founder and executive director of the Malibu Foundation for Environmental Education, which helped organize More >

It’s June and the City’s in Bloom, So Why Not Get Out & Volunteer?
Jun 1st
It’s almost summer here in sunny Los Angeles, and that means a lot of us are getting excited about heading to the beach! We bet you wouldn’t be quite as excited if our beaches were always littered with debris, like plastic bags and soda cans.
Well, help ensure that our local waterways and beaches are as clean as can be by getting out to pick up a little trash. There’s also a few other ways to get involved, so check out a few of the upcoming events below!
> Wow! Saturday, June 4th is a seriously busy day for volunteering in Los Angeles. You have a number of really cool events to pick from. How about cleaning up trash with the Historic Highland Park Neighborhood Council? Or maybe participate in World Ocean Day with the Cabrillo Marine Aquarium? If that doesn’t entice you to get out, the 1st Annual Green City Fair will. Hey, even Ed Begley Jr. will be there!
> Sunday, June 5th will also bring in the green cheer. Hop on your bike for the 11th Annual LA River Ride with the LA Bicycle Coalition.
> On Sunday, June 12th join the Theodore Payne Foundation to “re-imagine” the California lawn.
> Sustainable Works will be hosting More >
